In UK english, "If you think IE sucks, use Firefox" can be miscontrued to imply that Firefox sucks even more than IE...

Presumably that's just a UK thing though :)

Rob, unfortunately, it means that in US English too... I'm confused how anyone thought it would be a positive comment.

I think it can only be misunderstood when it is properly pronounced. Voice is everything here!

The written sentence alone might be interpreted this or that way. Actualy, the pure meaning without any interpretation, IMHO, is a positive statement for firefox saying that you should use something else (Firefox) when you think that your standard browser (IE) is bad.

German:
Wenn Du glaubst, IE ist Mist, benutze Firefox

More precise, positive:
Wenn Du glaubst, IE ist Mist, benutze stattdessen Firefox
("stattdessen" -> instead)
->If you think IE sucks, use Firefox instead

More precise, negative:
Wenn Du glaubst, IE ist Mist, solltest Du erstmal Firefox benutzt haben
->If you think IE sucks, (geez) you should have seen Firefox
