Memory issue on tabs now fixed

One problem that many people have been seeing is this. Opening lots of tabs and then closing them do not free memory. This should now have been fixed by checkins yesterday and today. This fixes some memory leaks in Mozilla Firefox. For more information please turn to the bug report:
Memory use does not go down after closing tabs (resources not released)

When can we expect this Fix? In version 1.01 or in 1.1 or in 1.5.

In Firefox 1.1.
Firefox 1.0.1 will have only security related improvements.

That's not quite true. Firefox 1.0.1 will have several non-security fixes. See http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/releases/1.0.1.html.

The previous note has an extra dot at the end of the URL rendering it a 404. Corrected URL:

This bug hasn't yet been fixed. The checkins yesterday (from bug 283063) were for the Mozilla suite. Work by dbaron et al to move them over is continuing, though.

I'm sorry, but I'm still trying to get a handle on the bugzilla process. I noticed that that bug is marked as NEW. If the patches have already been checked in, why hasn't the bug been marked as FIXED instead?

Comment by CFlakes at February 23, 2005 02:33 PM | Permalink

People, read the bug(s). Bug 283063 is fixed, this was for Firefox trunk (i.e. FF 1.1). The mentioned Bug 131456 will fix it for Mozilla Suite (trunk only) and some new parts for FF too. But the patch is not checked in yet. That is the reason for NEW. All branch releases like FF 1.0.1/Mozilla Suite 1.7.6 don't have these patches (or don't need it).

Thanks for sharing this. I really look forward to download a new version of Firefox with this bug out.

Right now i have approx. 40 tabs open consuming 120+MB on my laptop. Hopefully this could bring memory consumption down to a reasonable level.

For the Firefox team, Gemal and the other bug hunters: Keep on rockin'!

One fix taken back: backed out the fix.

One thing I have noticed is that when I minimize Firefox, the memory usage goes way down. When I maximize it again, the memory bounces back, but to a smaller value than before. It then slowly begins creeping up again.
