Important checkins - New option dialog and better opening dialog
Some cool checkins just happened:
The New Options Dialog landed.
Read all about the new option dialog in the wiki at mozilla.org or Read the bug report. View the different dialogs in the new redesigned options. You can even watch a movie with the new option dialog.
Retrieve proper display name for application handlers
Currently the Opening dialog for Firefox looks something like this. This will now change a bit due to the landing of this bug Retrieve proper display name for application handlers. The bug was depending on another bug which also landed today. Screenshots of the new Download Actions dialog are here, here and here.

There appears to be something wrong with the wmv file as it freezes my computer for several seconds and when it does play, doesn't show anything.
Comment by Peter Hewitt at February 25, 2005 12:40 PM | PermalinkThe video file works for me.
But the preference panel doesn't indicate what panel the user is currently focusing, which is very confusing! :-/
Comment by minghong at February 25, 2005 01:49 PM | PermalinkGenerally much better. However, I echo Minghong above, you should be clearly able to see which option panel you are on, and also panels should change color when you mouseover. Should be a fairly easy change, after all, it works like that already.
My main gripe: what the hell is sanitize? It means nothing to me. Why add a layer of confusion above 'Clear This Now' and 'Clear All Now'? Definitely fails the grandma test.
Will also post similar comment on Ben's blog to make sure he sees.
Comment by .org at February 25, 2005 02:13 PM | PermalinkSanitize is a bit of an Americanism. Could probably do with a rethink on that one.
Comment by Robin at February 25, 2005 04:27 PM | PermalinkWell, given that it appears that comments on Ben's blog are disabled I suppose I'll post here.
Is it me or when Browsing History is displayed under Privacy, the list on the left shows that it's the Cookies section (in the movie)? Hopefully the movie was made before the code was finished and that was just a fluke. Either way I'm sure it would be an easy problem to resolve.
About the Sanitize issue...
If our effort is meant to obfuscate, by all means sanitize, disinfect, expunge, purge, scour, sterilize and absolve those settings.
Otherwise, might I suggest "Clear Tracks" as potential text. I think the text should be kept simple, using words like Clear or Clean. "Clear My Tracks" is another variation that comes to mind.
I believe that other languages and cultures would be able to duplicate this idea in the button text.
The description text would then read "This button" rather than Sanitize.
I continue to hold that the button text ought to be followed by "...". It has been commented several times before that this button is confusing and looks like it will accomplish something immediately. "..." is consistently used throughout Firefox (in buttons and menus alike) to indicate that a resulting window will be presented.
