Looking for zip versions of releases of Mozilla Firefox
I never really understood why Mozilla Foundation stopped making zip versions of releases. Using the installer changes my Windows registry and I don't want that! Can I use the installer without it touching my Windows registry at all?
I use the releases to test my extensions with and now I need a zip version of Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 in both en-US and da-DK. Can anybody directory me to a place where I can download these releases? I'm talking about Windows versions only.

Zip versions were removed from release directories because of lamers, so many other things, too.
Comment by nameless at July 11, 2005 07:49 PM | PermalinkIf you know the build ID of the release, you could look for the nightly directory which should contain a zip build from the same source.
Besides, if you prevent the installer from accessing the registry, the application still will do.
Comment by Thomas Stache at July 11, 2005 07:55 PM | PermalinkI don't suppose this would help you, but I usually archive the Polish (pl-PL) *.zip for Win32 for every Firefox release - here:
http://beta.firefox.pl/not-supported/firefox/
Maybe da-DK guys also backup the nightly .zip builds which became release builds?
Well according to Mozillazine, Firefox 1.0.4 was released on May 12th, 2005. But the build was from the day before. So you can get the equivalent zip build here:
http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/2005-05-11-13-aviary1.0.1/
Try http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/2005-05-11-13-aviary1.0.1/
http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/2005-05-12-08-aviary1.0.1/
Windows explorer gives as properties of my official installed exe:
File Version: 1.0.4
Product Version: 1.7.8: 2005051118
so I assume the nightly above will be same level.
Comment by hermann at July 11, 2005 08:30 PM | Permalinkfrom Asa's blog, these apparently a few reasons and it also gives some insight as to the reasoning and answers some complaints about this decision.

Comment by feep at July 11, 2005 08:36 PM | PermalinkBasically the reason was that it meant maintaining two packages (so that adding/removing files from the installation had to be done in two places) and doing QA on two builds. The final straw was when differences between the zip and the installer caused a load of problems for people that were using the installer build having previously used a zip build. As previous posts have pointed out, you can still find the zip builds - just grab the nightly zip that corresponds to the release.
As Asa's blog entry point out, while the installer makes a couple of registry changes, running the app itself actually makes more changes. Without the installer's registry changes, it's more work to install some plugins.
Comment by michaell at July 11, 2005 08:49 PM | PermalinkI need zip-files as well, for some weird reason the installer never works on my old crappy computer.
So I've started using nightlies. They certainly seem stable enough.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/
Stuff that ends with "aviary1.0.1" is from the branch leading to FF 1.05 (just a bugfix branch), while the "trunk" is leading to FF 1.1 (via the Deer Park releases) (if I'm not totally mistaken?).
The trunk is a lot more fun to use (though probably a bit more risky), with some new cool features (e.g "Fast back (and forward)"), see http://www.mozilla.org/projects/deerpark/new-browser-features.html

With the removal of the zip builds, I've been getting the Moox optimized builds which kills two birds with one stone:
http://www.moox.ws/tech/mozilla/firefox.htm
He has releases and nightlies.
Comment by Jemal at July 11, 2005 09:49 PM | PermalinkThis is no longer a problem. The zip builds are now generated from the installer manifests, so they're the same.
I've been using the ZIP builds myself recently, but I would not recommend that to a newbie, or a fool.
The installer modifies the registry because it has to. It adds itself to the "WMP whitelist", so you get a newer verseion of the windows media player inside firefox (instead of the old classic control).
Also, the installer changes the registry so other applications can see that you have firefox installed, and what version of it.
If you're not a tester then stick to the installer builds. The only benefit of the zips is that they're much easier to archive/install.

I cant believe people are so naive
the reason that the zip was removed was because of the EULA, think about it if you can download the same software without having to click through the EULA how are you gonna hold it up in a court?
Apart from that nothing else makes sense.
I guess the QA thing makes a bit of sense but MOFO is not without money and volunteers, hence can handle the bit of extra load.
!!!!
well since 1.0.5 is out you probably want that instead of 1.0.4 now, huh
if I understand correctly, the nightly build which is also 1.0.5 is located at:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-11-18-aviary1.0.1/
and there is a Zip file in there
!!!!
Comment by Block Sheep at July 13, 2005 07:26 PM | Permalinkin windows you can find out the "Product Version" by right-clicking on the executable and going to properties
it will tell you the yyyymmdd## number so you can figure out which nightly is also the official release

hugo, you are seeing Bug 276515 Installer quickly and silently crashes on an old Windows NT 4.0 box
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=276515
or Bug 246765 installation aborted with 7zip - Unspecified error

or Bug 251170 CUSTOM installation gives error message

The earlier firefox versions (then fire'bird') used to come in zip version. It did not touch windows registry and this was one of the main reasons I downloaded it.
Now the Mozilla Foundation has earned so much trust that I really don't bother if it changes the registry or not.
