Miranda and plugins
I couldn't live without my Miranda. Miranda IM is a multi protocol instant messenger client for Windows. Miranda IM is designed to be resource efficient and easy to use. It uses very little memory and requires no installation. It connects to ICQ, AIM, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc. All in one client! And it's free and open source. I use the following plugins. Some of them are bundle with the default installation of Miranda.- AIM - Talk to AIM people
- MSN - Talk to MSN people
- ICQ - Talk to ICQ people
- Yahoo - Talk to Yahoo people
- Always Online - Helps you restore connection automatically.
- Autorun - Enable/disable to launch Miranda IM with system startup.
- mToolTip - Show various contact infos as tooltip when the cursor is over a contact
- MultiWindow - Enables plugins to add new windows or frames to main Miranda window
- Plugin Uninstaller - Offers the possibility to directly remove plugins
- Smiley Add - Adds smileys to the standard message dialog
- Wassup - Checks for updates
- World Time - Shows dates and times from different timezones

Miranda is an awesome piece of software. The IRC plugin is also excellent, providing an easy way to IRC from within Miranda. DCC options have recently been added so hoorah!
Comment by chob at November 18, 2004 02:16 PM | PermalinkMiranda is okay but I much prefer Trillian Pro. I've had chance to test the new version 3 that is currently in alpha and it looks really good. Gaim has also come on a long way recently.

You can use it on a single floppy, or a CD (provided you don't use message history).
Or alongside Firefox on that USB-Drive.

Comment by another features at November 18, 2004 03:47 PM | PermalinkMy IM-program of choice is Psi (http://psi.affinix.com/). It's a Jabber-only client. IMO, Jabber rocks! ;-)
But I have to say that it's good that people start using multi-protocol clients instead of single-protocol. It gives people the chance to try out some alternative protocols, like Jabber.

This plugin allows you to send and receive contacts. It uses protocol API and is completely protocol independent.

How does it compare to Gaim? I've been using Trillian.cc free version for a couple years. Mainly to get plaintext logging and simplified UI. Gawd I had to hunt thru a bunch of skins to find a simple one. But Trillian is buggy in many ways. Gaim at least connected with ICQ properly and didn't lose my mouse pointer. I gave Miranda a brief look-see, it looked very compact at least. I'm thinking the future is in Jabber.org... I'm so wanting an IM network and client that is designed with the same OSS principles as Mozilla/Firefox.
